Some cities are places you visit. Others slowly become part of your life. For me, İzmir belongs to the second category.
My relationship with İzmir did not begin with the idea of creating a website. It began by spending time here, meeting people, walking through its neighbourhoods, working with local businesses and gradually discovering a city that is much richer and more complex than the image usually presented to the outside world.
There is, of course, the İzmir everyone immediately sees: the Gulf, the sunsets along Kordon, the ferries crossing the bay, Kemeraltı, the cafés, the Aegean lifestyle and the openness that gives the city its distinctive character.
But there is another İzmir too: the city of entrepreneurs building companies, manufacturers exporting around the world, students and professionals creating new lives, families dealing with everyday realities, international residents trying to understand how things work, and visitors who want to discover something beyond the usual tourist itinerary.
That is the İzmir I wanted OnlineIzmir to tell.
Opening a window on İzmir
I created OnlineIzmir.com with a simple ambition: to open a window on İzmir for the rest of the world while creating something genuinely useful for the people who live here.
OnlineIzmir is not intended to be just another tourism website, nor simply another local news portal. I want it to become a place where different sides of the city meet.
A visitor should be able to understand what to see and how to experience İzmir beyond the postcard. Someone considering moving here should find practical information about everyday life. Residents should be able to discover new places, people, events and developments affecting the city. And entrepreneurs or international companies should be able to see something else entirely: the industrial capabilities, talent, investment potential and business opportunities that exist in İzmir and the wider Aegean region.
These worlds are often presented separately. In reality, they are all part of the same city.
More than a city guide
My professional life has been largely connected with international business, market development and projects linking companies and people across different countries and cultures.
That experience has shaped the way I look at İzmir. When I visit a district, meet an entrepreneur, speak with a manufacturer or discover a local initiative, I am interested not only in what it is, but also in the people behind it and the opportunities and connections that might grow from it.
For this reason, OnlineIzmir will talk about food, neighbourhoods, culture, transport and everyday city life, but it will also give significant space to business, entrepreneurship, international trade, investment, innovation and the people helping shape İzmir’s future.
I want to tell their stories, introduce interesting İzmir businesses to international readers and help OnlineIzmir become a bridge between the city and people outside Türkiye who might otherwise never discover what İzmir has to offer.
İzmir, beyond the postcard
There are already many places where you can find a list of İzmir’s attractions or read an official announcement. OnlineIzmir has a different purpose.
We want to provide context, experience and useful information: to explain not simply where something is, but why it matters; not simply what happened, but what it means for someone living, travelling or doing business here.
Whenever possible, we want to go directly to the people behind the story: residents, entrepreneurs, experts, institutions, artists, professionals and businesses. Because a city cannot really be understood only through statistics, press releases or tourist attractions.
A city is ultimately the people who live it.
About the founder

Mauro Benigno is the founder of OnlineIzmir and an international business consultant and entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience working across different countries and markets.
His professional activity focuses on international business development, market entry, trade and connecting companies across borders. His work in international market expansion, together with his personal relationship with İzmir, its people, lifestyle, entrepreneurial energy and international potential, led him to create OnlineIzmir as an independent platform dedicated entirely to the city.
An invitation
OnlineIzmir is still at the beginning of its journey. My ambition is to build it gradually into a trusted international reference for anyone who wants to visit İzmir, live in İzmir, understand İzmir or do business in İzmir.
And above all, I want to keep discovering the city myself.
If you have a story worth telling, a business that deserves to be discovered, an initiative that could create value for İzmir, or simply something about the city that you believe more people should know about, I would be happy to hear from you.
Welcome to OnlineIzmir.
İzmir, beyond the postcard.
